Schola Cantorum of Waynesboro

Singing Music of the Masters

Sing with Us PDF Print E-mail

Schola invites talented adult singers of all musical backgrounds to audition. Singers should be able to sight-read and learn their parts  on their own. Schola Cantorum welcomes singers aged 18 and over from all cultural traditions.

At the heart of Schola Cantorum, lies its members' desire to master and present great music of the masters to the community. The ensemble is comprised of approximately 50 volunteer musicians who represent some of the most talented singers from the local Shenandoah Valley area (primarily Augusta County, Staunton and Waynesboro). The size of the organization is limited, in part, by many of the venues in which we perform, primarily church sanctuaries.

Auditions

Auditions for joining Schola Cantorum will be held at least two weeks  prior to  the beginning of each semester, if any vacancies have occurred. This will be August for the Fall Semester and late December/early January for the Spring Semester.  See contact info below.

Each audition consists of:

  • Vocalization to determine your vocal range and voice quality
  • A short sight-reading exercise
  • A short solo supplied by the Music Director

The Music Director will evaluate your potential as a member, in the following areas:

  • A good choral voice, not necessarily solo quality
  • A sensitivity to the music and its interpretation
  • The ability to learn your part by yourself
  • The ability to blend with other voices while carrying your own part

In filling vacancies in the ensemble, the Choral Director is concerned not only about the ability of the candidate but also about the overall balance of parts within the organization.

Members pay dues  for each semester and purchase and maintain their concert wardrobe. Rehearsals are held each Tuesday from 7:00 - 9:00 PM from the beginning of the semester to the concert. Because of the difficulty of the music we present, attendance at rehearsals is critical and is monitored by "section leaders." The Fall semester begins immediately after Labor Day in September and the Fall Concert is usually held in late November.  Rehearsals for the Spring semester begin in early January and the concert is usually in late March or early April.
