Jesse E. Hopkins, Artistic Director & Conductor
Jesse E. Hopkins, Professor Emeritus, Bridgewater College, assumed the position of Artistic Director and Conductor of Schola Cantorum in the Fall of 2013. A 1970 graduate of Bridgewater College, he holds the Master of Music Education degree from Madison College and a doctorate in music education and conducting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
During his 35-year tenure at Bridgewater College, Dr. Hopkins and his choirs performed the premiers of fifteen new choral works by internationally known composers including Alice Parker, Daniel Gawthrop, René Clausen, James Fritschel, Kinley Lange and Howard Helvey. In 1999, he was named the College's first Edwin L. Turner Distinguished Professor.
Hopkins' work and interest in international travel have taken him abroad more than fifty times. His ensembles have performed throughout Western and Eastern Europe, the British Isles, and the Peoples' Republic of China. In 1993, he was Artist-in-Residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
Dr. Hopkins has frequently served as a guest conductor for school and church events, including the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference on five occasions. He has been active in the American Choral Directors' Association, and served as a reviewer for the Choral Journal.
Dr. Hopkins resides in Bridgewater with his wife of forty-one years, Alice Lee, who is a member of the alto section.
Mary Beth Flory, Accompanist
Mrs. Mary Beth Flory serves as the accompanist for Schola Cantorum. In addition she serves as pianist at the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren, a position she has held since 1971. She is a 1970 graduate of Bridgewater College and earned a master of music degree from James Madison University in 1993. Mrs. Flory was adjunct instructor in music at Bridgewater College for 22 years where she taught private piano and also served as staff accompanist. Recently she retired from her home private music studio after 43 years of teaching piano and voice. Mrs. Flory is the wife of Ted Flory, a member of Schola, the mother of three grown children and four grandchildren.
